hello my friends!
well,i will get straight to the core:I had a strong conversation with my teacher concerning warming up!He is of the opinion:''Stop this nonsense about warming up!what if a band asks you sometime to sit in?what are u gonna tell them?oh,guys let me warm up and then we play!?of course no!u have to be always ready!''
and i told him:''Yeah but every athlete warms up before a game and every drummer must do so!virgil and all the pros warm up,too!''
and he answered:''i agree butu haven't reached their speed in order to do so,too!''
and i said:''i am gonna ask the guys in the forum if they know, whether Virgil always warmed up or not!even when he was not a pro!''
so guys can you help on this?i really really want to end this conversation!!!
thanks a lot and sorry,if u got tired by this!i will apreciate all replies!

Dont know about when he was young, but Virgils habit is to play drums before performing. Even a clinic that would be on in the afternoon, he would play as much as he could, and i even saw him drumming on his knee once while being introduced to a crowd! Whether you have pro speed or not, you ARE going to play better with a warm up. That being said it doesnt mean you literally cant play properly if you dont warm up first either.
Thats my take anyway!! Hope it helps :)

It's true what jimi says. Warm up is important for playing to your max potential speed and relaxation. But it's also true that you can play just fine with out warm up, you just won't be able to play what you would normally play warmed up.
But going on stage in front of people, I find sometimes adrenaline seems to replace warm up and you play about like you would warmed up...that may seem bad, but it seems to happen for me.

You can't always warm up, like when you sit in, but if you think you might sit in it would be advisable to get a little loose before you go to the club (a few rudiments and definitely some stretching will do the trick). Warming up is the main thing that will keep you from injury.

if i were really in a situation that wont allow to warm up, just like u said, sitting in and just ready to start the music, i wud play some singles and doubles on my right knee, 30 seconds is enough to get the forearm muscles ready .
