yeah the thicker or heavier they are the louder they sound. but overall i prefer the basic 5A.
What effects does the shoulder thickness/length have on a stick?
I like a thicker stick for trad. grip so i ordered virg's assault, but i'm using 5bs at the mo.
I'm a vic firth man myself...5b american classics..WOODEN TIPPED!!...great for all kinds of music.

Thicker shoulder part of the stick of course will be a lot heavier making strokes especially for fast full stroke rolls easier to do atleast the way i experienced using such sticks. Really good for rock music plus the fact they make cymbals sounds fuller when hit on the edge part.

Vic Firth - Omar Hakims
The contrast between the tip and the
large shoulder allows for more varied
effects on the HH and cymbals.
Silver Fox is trying to get their production
line solid. They have some interesting
concepts and materials. They just have
to get a few things settled there.
I'll be demo-ing them again soon.

Tha Vader "Assult" are very well rounded sticks to me. Yes I know Virgil uses them and yes I tried them because of his influence. But ,I really like how the stick lays rith in y hand. Fits like a glove! Very light too. Just have to let gravity do all the work! RythmTroll here, signing out. "Piece"
can someone send me a pair of Vaters virgil's assault drumstick for free? no one sells here in Philippines

VF OH (Omar Hakim).
I love the small round tip and the heavy barrell.
If they'd tip the Harvey Mason stick, that would
be nice too but they won't.

I use the Neil Peart Signature stick (Promark 747) for most things...it's made out of oak so they last forever and a day. Plus they are a pretty light stick considering the amount of power they can deliver.
For lighter things (ie.Jazz) I tend to use the Dave Weckl Evolution stick (Vic Firth). It provides really nice cymbal definition and has incredible rebound. I still use the neil peart stick for louder Jazz stuff as well (ie.Big Bands, etc.)

I use Vater Rock for more heavier playing and when I practise more doublebass...vater Fusion when playing softer, fusion etc...
...vater Manhattan for jazzplaying.
And when I play on my pad I use SD1 General Vic firth.
And my brushes are clayton camerons model.

I've been using only Promark nylon tipped 5Bs for as long as I can remember
but the other day I spent AU$140 on some new sticks:
3 pairs of nylon tipped Promark 2Bs
3 pairs of nylon tipped Promark 5Bs
1 pair of some cheapy AMS brand or something black painted 'white oak' nylon tipped 5A sticks.

I've been using all sorts of sticks over the past years, But when I tried out the Colaiuta signature sticks I was totally convinced that these were the right sticks for me. They are the most versatile stick I've ever had in my hands.
Perfect for soft playing as for heavy pounding.;)
Very Durable!

Call me a nerd, but I like to use the Assault stick and sometimes the Shedder as well. It really moves your muscles the Shedder!!

I use Virgil's Assault from Vater... I like them A LOT!!! they're quite heavy... before that I was playing Vic Firth 5B, but when I switched to those virgil sticks, it was like I was playing with entire TREES or sth!! but when all my virgil sticks were broken, i had to switch back to 5b, and it sucked!! now I bought some new sticks (the drumstore where I take lessons sells them! pretty cheap too, i bought 2 pairs for like 24 euro or sth...!), and again, virgil's sticks feel really heavy, but I love it! you can really put power into it! and i don't just like those sticks because my fav drummer plays them... :)
im just using sd1 general vic firth stick it has a nice grip and a light stick so easy to play, and it bounces automatically

I use 3S (tree trunks) for practice on the drum pad which I take with me in my overnight bag but I generally use 2B sticks and Virgils "Assualt".
read that some people didnt think that Virgil's Assault lasted long enough.
got a pair yesterday so im going to find out for myself.

Hey I'm new! :)
On the pad I'm using Virgil's Assault
On the set I'm using 5B or A8 and this time they didn't have Vater's so i got Regal Tip. for the first time! :)
I didn't understand why in the first set session the tip got all black... (anyone knows why?..)
bye bye for now

i use zildjians *manu katche sig drum sticks* they are pretty balanced..
or sometimes i use pro-mark 5Bs or portnoy sig drum sticks...
i havent really played with virgils assault or shredder..but ive held them beforw..personally i find them too heavy for me...but i will give it a shot one day!
The heavy stick is good for practice pad/snare work, because it gets all those muscles working harder and your endurance and power can improve a good bit. you can still use whatever stick you like on the kit then.
