Drumming...well, it's a great medium of self expression for me because it combinds both physical and mental artistic points. In other words, it's a very physical way of artistic expression.

Drumming is such a spiritual outlet. It allows you to be free. and when do you have the best days of YOUR life? WHEN YOU PLAY DRUMS OF COURSE!! We rule the world!! We pound out our deepest most darkest thoughts(or at least I do.Im a troll what can I say.Its not easy being a troll)and we listen to it come out in pattern form!! THE VOICE OF THE DRUM IS HERE TO STAY!!! YOU HAVE A VOICE!! SO EXPRESS IT TO THE FULLEST!! and take in mind that everyday you play those drums you are pushing the music world to live on and you are further benifitting the natural energy of universal drum to live on..........whatever that means.

I might be the elder statesman here, as you'll be able to see by my reply.

I play drums professionally in a band because after doing so for nearly 47 years now, I really don't know how to do anything else!
I began drumming at age 8 when drumheads were still 'calfskin'!!
I turned pro at age 16 whilst still attending High School(Yeah I looked old enough to play in niteclubs & bars back then:)and have never looked back.

I'm now 51 & play every week with the band i've been with for almost 10 years now. We get alot of work & play an array of music from Prog type stuff(Niacin-Tull-King Crimson ect)to blues(Stevie Ray Vaughn-Johnny Winter-other blues) & retro heavy music, Led Zep-Blodywn Pig-Savoy Brown-Foghat-Jeff Beck-Hendrix, the list goes on & on! We have a play list that contains over 700 songs we've built up over the 10 years.

Plus as someone else mentioned, I like to HIT THINGS! Anyway,
won't bore you guys anymore than I have already. Hi to Jeppe &
Jimi & all others out there who know me already, all else i'll see you in here somewhere!

Thanks Blackzoner.

Drumming makes me feel good, the theory side is very intersting for me and i love polyrhythms and odd groupings. it's an obssessive passion that takes me away from the real world everytime i sit behind my kit. all that said though, Virg is my inspiration:)

Got inspired from watching parade/marching bands in my young teenage and from then I have played and played. Everything from congas to mallet percussion to drumset to piano...but now itīs only drums :)
And like everyone else here, Virgil is a big influence to me.

well, me and my girlfriend had a little discussion on this
She plays the piano, and i asked her what did she feel when she was playing it. She said she felt like she was in touch with herself. Though she didnt feel "free", she felt as if she could express her emotions on the piano.
I told her, that on the contrary, when i played drums, i felt free and liberated of my true self, i could do whatever i want and give so many different feels of the drumming.
Well, thats why I play drums... they rock!

I play because of guys like Donati, Cobham, Gadd, Williams, Colaiuta, Rich etc. Professionally or not, they make me always want to me a better drummer. THEY MAKE ME BETTER.
